NIL and College Football

Excuse this rant from someone somewhat older...

The FSU vs Georgia debacle is a good reason to change the NIL and transfer rules. FSU is no where near the team it was during the regular season due to drop out and transfers. I find the lack of loyalty to the team disturbing. I get it that these kids are risking big time money if they might get drafted and are hurt but they got the chance to make that money because they played college football. As someone mentioned on another thread, these bowl games are glorified spring practice games....

I agree that college players in big money sports should get paid something to get some of the added value of the show they put on and to have a life during their college time as they can not work a part time job. But if players are paid, they are professionals so shouldn't they sign an agreement to play all the games they are physically fit for. As a customer of these sports, whether I pay at the gate for a ticket or for on line streaming, I want to see the team at its best and every player who paid and is healthy play. Right now it seems the good college player are having their cake and eating it too.... while the the large majority of players are still unpaid......

Some simple rule changes might have an impact. Delay the transfer declaring time until after all bowl games. Bowl games are part of the season so I do not understand why players can declare before they are done. Limit NIL or give a flat out salary to players.

Call me nostalgic or against change but this is not the college football of my father!

Portal Target Spotlight: Troy DL TJ Jackson

Already a pretty coveted player with offers from A&M and others, but BC is one of a handful now in play. Big-time producer, two time all-Sun Belt player. Love that he can play DT and DE.

Halftime thoughts on Fenway Bowl

1. Crowd's about what I expected

It looks empty and that's because it is. CF seats actually tarped off...the most half-assed bowl game setup anywhere in the country. I hate this Sox ownership group. Credit to the fans that are in the ballpark and sticking this one out though.

2. Castellanos' legs are such a weapon

Obviously nothing new, but some of the situations he's escaped already today and created positive yards out of are pretty remarkable. Weather not helping the offense, so he may need to do it all.

3. Impressive response drive before the half.

10 plays, 77 yards, 6:07 and the creativity is what stood out. The little pitch to Robichaux with the throwback to Castellanos might be the most creative thing they've ran all year. More impressive was the fact that it came immediately after SMU had its own long TD drive.

4. Tackling still a problem at times.

Same story all year.

5. Terrible drive for defense to give up at the end of the half

On the flip side, defense can't give up a TD drive in the final three minutes after the offense just worked its butt off to get in the end zone. 10/55/2:59, Jaylan Knighton 6 yard TD catch and it's 14-10 Mustangs at the break.

6. Weather a factor, but still need more from the offense

SIX passing yards in the first half for BC (122 for SMU). Eight 1st downs for BC (14 for SMU). 16:08 possession time for SMU, 13:51 for BC. I know it's a terrible field and rain/wind isn't your friend on a day like this, but those are pretty pitiful numbers.

QB Depth For 2024

We have now seen two traditional power programs disintegrate offensively as they were forced to play their 3rd string freshman QB. Watching Ohio State last night fail to move the ball was very similar to the FSU offense in the ACC Championship game. I think one thing the transfer portal has done is spread good QB’s out to the 130+ FBS programs. Many programs just don’t have game ready depth as they did just a few years ago. Where does BC stack up? Will their season be sabotaged if TC goes down?
Most likely we would see Jacobe Robinson or Matt Rueve. Neither of these two were recruited as dual threat QB’s so we would probably see an adjustment in play calling but my suspicion is Robinson can run a bit if need be. The incoming freshman Jonathon Montague is a true dual threat QB but if he has to play in 2024 you are likely looking at an OSU/FSU type situation. I have no idea what has become of Peter Delaportas but he isn’t even mentioned any longer as part of the QB picture. In summary if TC does get injured you are left rolling the dice on your season with a QB that has virtually no game experience.

Always believe in BC

I don't care what anyone says but that was damn good win and like coach Dale with the Hoosiers I think we should give the guy a chance. We have a real athlete at QB. the kids seem to like each other. I'm a former track guy, got a scholarship, was average but donate $1200 to the Flynn Fund because I'm a better man from the process. We aren't Michigan or Bama but these kids play hard. Donate. I'm going broke, but do it and then write to Fr. Leahy to spend some of Peter Lynch's endowment.
Anyway, I'm a positive guy but expect the negative. Portal. Team. Athletic QB. Tougher D. Wish we were in the B 10.
Love BC.

Defense

I know we have some talented transfer DB's coming in next year, but was very impressed with following Freshman at DB yesterday:
KP Price
Carter David
Max Tucker
Kahil Ali.
This is in addition to the talented Sophmores we have at DB.

I saw that Bryce Steele was a participant in yesterday's game. If so, that is good news. His athleticism is sorely needed at LB.

My concern remains at linebacker for next year. Below are linebackers with experience and it appears we are very thin.
Bryce Steele - JR
Daveon Couch - Soph
Owen McGrath - Soph
Jaylen Blackwell Soph

Hopefully, a Sione Hala and/or a Edwin Kolenge, or someone else, can be moved over to the outside LB position.

Number of Wins this year

With the non-conference schedule done the question becomes how many wins can this team get in conference play. They have schedule that should get them 10 wins and at least a ,500 record for ACC games. This should get them in post season play - most likely NIT, which would be a nice step forward for the program.

They play FSU, ND, and Lou twice. Some wins against NCST, Syracuse, GT and Wake are all possible. Harris needs to continue to score, Post stays healthy. JZ puts up his 10 and the combination of Hand and Kelley play solid. All these ACC teams are struggling and if the team develops as past Grant teams have by getting better as the year goes on, this team can have the first winning record in a decade or more at BC.
