Transfer Portal Results

As we all know the transfer portal recruiting is extremely important this off season. In my estimation BC has a hit rate of 50% this season of transfers really helping the team for the full season.

-Rooks DL +
-Banks DT +
-Jones DL out injured for the season
-Washington DB left team
-Johnson DB below average impact
-Nelson DB below average impact
-Pupel DB below average impact
-Castellanos QB +
-Robichaux RB +
-Hergel OG +
-Taylor OT +
-O’Keefe WR played 5 games injured
-Tomlin WR +
-Takacs TE below average impact

Now I’m not even sure 50% hit rate for transfers is a bad number. It very well could be the norm. BC seemed to really hit on offense but the defensive transfers have mostly not been up to needed ACC standards.

I just feel that if 2024 is going to be a success with a winning record BC needs to have a much higher hit rate to fill all the gaps we are seeing on the roster for upper level ACC type players. Especially on defense the talent gap is really showing as injuries/departures increase.

Halftime thoughts from the Alumni press box

1. Gross

I can't believe I thought they were better than this. The lack of talent is glaring (injuries in the secondary certainly don't help), but this is embarrassing at this point. Miami out-gained the 269-132 in the first 30 minutes and BC punted 4 times after the impressive opening drive

2. Castellanos is simply a runner playing QB

I did think the early runs he looked as good as he had all year, but the short hop, back foot throw to Dino on the sideline is just a glaring example of how he's just not a good passer. Needs to be a huge point of emphasis this offseason. Or, maybe offer HC's Matt Sluka in the portal? Better and bigger in my opinion.

3. The lack of talent at LB and DL is also glaring

So much for "letting them loose" after the UVA game. Zero pass rush regularly throughout the year. Obviously missing Steele really hurt the LB's, but man watching Miami carve them up both on the ground and through the air is tough.

4. Playing for Fenway now

Hope everyone is pumped for an 11 AM kick off 10 minutes down the road on a random Thursday. Winning this game probably would have put BC in the Pinstripe Bowl according to a few sources pregame. Now, not to much.

This and that

1. we will never know but it just feels like there was a connection between Hafley kicking his best defender off the team and the team immediately rolling over for the season. Literally they were on a 5 game winning streak and have not played a competitive moment of football since.

2. I don’t think they will fire Hafley but with AD James coming from Miami and him having to sit here and watch his former program drag BC all over the field for 4 quarters…well..he wasn’t James guy…maybe.. unfortunately James probably doesn’t have enough clout yet.

3. It’s going to be a really bad look if Hafley tries the self preservation nonsense after losing by 40 plus at home in the last game. “We are bowl eligible for the 3rd time in 4 years. Seven wins is a big thing to play for, young guys getting practice reps.. bottom line you can’t polish this turd.

60 Years Ago Today

President Kennedy assassinated in Dallas. I was in first grade at St Joseph's Elementary School. Mother Superior knocked on the door, Sister Theresa James stepped out and came back in the room crying. She told us the President had been shot and school was being dismissed. As a young child I was happy about early dismissal. My parents kept me in for most of weekend to watch the funeral. Like many here I still have the "Torch Has Passed" book. Might have been a Life Magazine piece documenting the events. My first life experience where I know where I was when it happened.

The JZ Question

There has been a lot of discussion about JZ and his role and value to the team. The Citadel game more or less proved he is the number 2 player on the team right now and will continue to be important for the team's success this year.

The question has become how well can he play in the ACC league games. I think JZ can remain extremely important to the team in ACC play. With Post being able to stretch the court and most likely taking the rim protector with him, it opens up JZ's back-to-the-basket game. He is fairly strong and can use this game against guards that might be more athletic than he. Some of the shots he sank at Citadel (such the one at the end of the game with his right hand coming from the left lane) indicate he has some nice moves. With his his 3 pt shot, and the potential of at least one other 3 pt threat (Hand), he might remain a 2nd or 3rd scoring threat the team needs on offense. Last year opposing defenses just stayed in the paint against BC and this aspect of this game and his driving was not effective. Threats from the 3 might change that...
