BOB recruiting

Really impressed by BOB's recruiting efforts so far. Namely, the sort of feedback from recruits upon receiving offers and/or visiting campus. Also he has been getting some highly rated kids on campus, and has seemingly been really well received locally with top recruits / coaches. There is a buzz and optimism around the program unlike any I have seen in following the program since the early 90s. I get that the importance of HS recruiting is now probably the third most important element of roster building behind keeping your top kids in the program and tapping into the portal to fill immediate needs, and NIL is now where the rubber meets the road, but still impressive what he has done so far.

Birdball Hosts Va Tech Weekend Series

The Birds are set to host their first ACC series vs the Hokies, which due to rain Sat, is now a double header starting at noon today. This will be the second straight year they've played Va Tech in a DH, and second ACC series already to feature one.

The Hokies are off to a fast start this year with a 15-4 overall record and a 5-1 ACC record with a sweep of ND and series win vs Louisville. They are a bit of a bomb squad with 53 hrs already on the year, good for 3rd in the country, and this is still after losing start 1B Gavin Michel to a broken wrist 2 weeks ago. Jr 3B Carson DeMartini already has 12 of those homers, he's and AA 3B with big pro ambitions. George Washington xfer Eddie Michaletti had 10 career HRs in 4 yrs, and already has 9 for the Hokies this year. He and DeMartini offer a powerful left-handed combo that will wreak havoc this weekend. After 4 years at Bucknell Chris Cannizaro got a 2nd year with the Hokies, and is mashing as a 6th year player should be, and former light hitting C Gerig Erbel has stepped in for Michel and is hitting over .400 with 5 HRs too, those two provide some right-handed balance. There's more stars in 2B Casey Martin and Clay Grady returning from last year too. The lineup is punishing, and we saw the game the Hokies did win last, was a HR fest in itself.

On the mound, there has been a lot of turn over, Chelmsford native and former Fr SP Griffin Green had TJ last fall, Dru Hackenberg was drafted (high even tho he had a mediocre season). Fr Brett Renfrow has been their Friday Night SP, and he's performed well with 31 Ks in 27IP and a 2.28 era. Impressive numbers who a Fr, who had a lot of draft interest out of HS. Rutgers xfer Wyatt Parliment has legislated his way to a good start a well, the former RP has a 21/5 K/BB ratio, so he's a strike thrower with a good hard slider and change up. Griffin Siteg might have the loudest stuff amongst their SPs, the rigth handed can bump to mid 90s. A pair of frosh, RHP Brady Kirtner, a 12th rounder of the Mets last summer, and LHP Madden Clement, son of former big leaguer Matt, have flashed their pro level stuff as well out of the pen. The offense needs to get to their starters and into their pen, where their inexperience could be a factor, esp in a double header. LHP Matthew Silverling has only pitched 6 innings so far, and he was someone that has success in a long relief role vs the Birds in previous years, and the rest of their pen features a bunch of 5th and 6th year xfers, with ECY xfer Jordan Little being the one most resembling a traditional "closer"

No word on Tyler Mudd's availability, given their powerful lefties, his role would be an important one, so fingers crossed. This is going to be a tough series, I think its a bad matchup for the Birds on the mound, but they aren't slouches at the plate either, so you never know.

What was the next question only Will Hunting could answer on a whiteboard in a Harvard mathematics hallway?: What would have been the pre-season odds of BC beating a final four team from last year three times (and they returned a good amount) while playing at least 35 games and not making the actual NCAAs?
