Summary:

1. Every bit as bad a loss as IUPUI, Nichols, UML and the rest of them.

2. I should have saw this coming after I spent the afternoon pleading passionately for the womens coach to be fired.

3. Tonight was not a fluke. Maine had better composure, a defined offebsive system, better shooters, more tenacity, and quicker guards.

4. The fact that this last paragraph was typed due to the truth and not out of frustration is worrisome.

5. Equally inept on both sides of the ball.

6. I have no idea what the offensive identity is. I don’t know what they are trying to do.Part of that is the current healthy lineup is offensively deficient. Madsen is a capable shooter, but can’t get to the rim, Penha is a half a shooter and not much else. Mcglockton and Mighty are nightclub bouncers, Zack is in a deep funk. Demarr is an athlete not a scorer, semi similar for Makai. Kelly is a distributing point guard who needs some seasoning.

7. The defense was the worst group of the night. Perimeter slow feet was staggering. I posted it in the game thread numerous times but that was tough to watch from Zak, really bad. Crushed on the boards all night. I hope it was an effort, focus thing, because if ACC level guards are going to get into the paint that easily then teams are going to be in the high 80’s every night.

8. Molinari is the defensive guru supposedly. Is this on him? I know you like to sit there looking like Ted Danson, but how about some attention to detail.

9. Earl timeouts don’t cost you anything.

10. What is with the early season dehydration issues with everyone.

11. Demaar’s injury looked rough. They are going to have limited bodies going to the Islands.

2022-23 Nerd Numbers Thread

nerds-mad.gif

Happy 2022-23 Kenpom release day! @mdougherty

-Ranked #74
-Teams within ten on each side include Wake, Arizona State, NC St (lower than us). FSU, Vandy, WVU higher.
-#74 was our final ranking, ironically, in 2009 the last time we made the dance.
-Projected record 15-14 (8-12).
-the site (barttorvik) that is super nerdy and makes kenpom look like James Bond has BC at #76 so nice to see a little consensus.

Will keep posting interesting nerd numbers as they pop up. Happy to keep talking to myself here but would love to see people add or their takes. I don't think these nerd numbers give us the answers but I do think they can make us question stuff in a good way.

My guess is the optimism is driven in large part by the five man numbers from evanmaya for our starting five, a pretty well regarded for BC recruiting class, and 100 hours of in depth tape breakdown of TJ Bickerstats.

Maine Preview
Maine Black Bears
HOME COURT Cross Insurance Center (5,800)
CONFERENCE America East
HEAD COACH Chris Markwood (1st year)

Maine is in the midst of a rough stretch. The program has not posted a winning record since 2010, and it has been nearly 10 years since their last double-digit win season. A 5-20 start and 354th-place finish on KenPom this past year were the final straws for head coach Richard Barron. Replacing him is Chris Markwood, a former Black Bear player who started on Maine’s last 20-win team — almost 20 years ago. Now, he’s looking to guide the program back to that level. Markwood, 40, joined Maine’s coaching staff after his playing days and has worked his way up the coaching ladder. His resume includes a few years under John Becker at Vermont and several more under Bill Coen at Northeastern. Most recently, he was an assistant at Boston College. Markwood brings experience under several successful head coaches and a familiarity with the program, making him a potential shot in the arm for his alma mater. Nevertheless, Markwood has a difficult road ahead to return Maine to prominence. The Black Bears ranked in the bottom 10 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency last season (KenPom), and that’s a deep hole from which to climb.

“We want to space the floor and be an execution team. We will play a pro-style, motion offense with simple structure actions. We want to give our guys reads and solutions based on how defenses cover us and give them the freedom to work within that.” —Chris Markwood

If the Black Bears are going to come out of hibernation this season, the emergence will start with their perimeter defense. Last season, Maine ranked dead last in the America East on that end, but Markwood believes they have major defensive potential. He described his preferred style as “hard-nosed, tough man-to-man defense that is aggressive on the ball. We want to load it up behind that and protect the paint. We want to make teams have to play 1-on-5 by being connected on that end of the floor.” Adefolarin “Fofo” Adetogun is arguably Maine’s top returning defender. He is a 6-1 stopper with the versatility and stout physical frame to cover bigger players. Markwood believes he can defend multiple positions and will deploy him in several ways. Adetogun is also the team’s top returning rebounder; his versatility allows for various lineup combinations.

Fellow backcourt returners Ja’Shonte Wright-McLeish and Byron Ireland will reprise roles on the perimeter. Wright-McLeish is a proven America East performer, having started 18 of 26 games last season, and he defends at a high level. Ireland, meanwhile, played a meager 13.3 minutes per game, but he is a strong, physical combo guard whose role could expand. Peter Filipovity and Novak Perovic are 6-7 returners who bring versatility as big wings. Markwood also has a pair of newcomers joining the program with high defensive potential on the perimeter. Kellen Tynes, a transfer from Montana State, could be particularly disruptive. He averaged just 2.1 points over 56 games with the Bobcats, but Markwood believes “he’s got a chance to be an allleague defender. He can be a lockdown perimeter defender in the America East, and he’s always been a great defender. His upside on that side of the ball is very high.” Incoming freshman Jaden Clayton is another potentially strong defender. He might be the dark horse for Maine as a new piece with two-way ability who could immediately crack the lineup. Markwood praises his IQ on both ends of the floor, as well as his willingness to create for others and his desire to be a good defender. Clayton could be a surprise major contributor, even in a backcourt with several returning pieces.

Pity the Cross

HC hammered tonite by Creighton 82-53 on national tv, probably their only such appearance this season. I can remember when the game with BC meant something and we lost as much as won. Think it all changed with the formation of the Big East Conference supposedly the Cross was approached about being a charter member of the new conference, remember it was bball only then, and turned it down, a mistake that sent them down to the second echelon of eastern basketball where they have remained ever since.

Morehead vs. Jurk

How do you think Hafley handles this? It seems like last week he knew Jurk was unable to go against NC State, but he still said it was Phil's team when healthy.

Morehead has to play vs. Notre Dame, which obviously has implications for Phil, his time there, and his performance this season.

I think Phil is "injured" for the remainder of the season, then he transfers elsewhere for another year. What type of program would bring him in? AAC?

With 14 seconds left

BC took their first lead in the last 5 games if I am correct:

1. Trailed whole game vs NCST

2. Trailed whole game vs Duke

3. Trailed whole game vs Uconn

4. Trailed whole game vs Wake

5. Trailed whole game vs Clemson

Two things:

A. Wow!!

B. Need to do something different with the way the team is starting games.

Maine

Cornell and Detroit-Mercy are both at least middle of the pack teams in underrated conferences. Maine was bottom of America East last year and is overwhelmingly picked last again this year. Coached by Chris Markwood now and he has a big job ahead of him. They hung with Nebraska in their opener into the second half largely due to the 3 point shooting of Gedi Juozopaitis, a transfer from Georgia Southern. We really shouldn’t be going to the wire with this team, whoever we have out tonight.

Postgame thoughts:

1. So very very happy for the kids. They are 18, 19,20 year old kids and they put a ton of time and effort into this and put their bodies on the line play after play and getting no results week after week and then having to read everything we, and others say about them has to be demoralizing. They played their asses off today, never quit, were playing 11 v 12 at times and kept their heads and composure against a veteran ranked team in their home and bagged a win to remember. Really well done.

2. Ditto for Hafley. He needed that.

3. Morehead, he of very limited experience, found himself down 14-0 on the road against a very good and deep defense, with absolutely not even a hint of a running game, and a leaky at best offensive line, drove the team 70 yards with under 3 minutes to go and threw a great pass for the winner. Stones. Kid has stones. If nothing else he seems to provide a beacon of hope for next year.

4. The kid has moxie. He has a big arm, confidence, and the players seem to feed off of him. He needs another 300-400 snaps, minimum and repetition until he hopefully begins to understand timing and angles in the pocket. Understanding when to tuck it and run and when(and where) to end the play with a throw away are going to be key to his development. He was under duress all day. He threw 2 picks, and truthfully his sideline pass to Tomlin was a ball that needs to hit the popcorn vendor in row 26. Could use a little more change up and less fastball on some of his dump offs, but did show some really encouraging things on crossing patterns to Tackas. Another thing that probably falls under the coaching category but one of my main concerns with Jurk coming into the season was whether he learned to hit the necessary passes to convert the 3rd and 4/5’s. Tight end quick hitters, wr curls, etc. Jurk has a habit of throwing long deep low percentage go route passes on 3rd and short. Morehead is doing the same.

5. Tonight is not the night for it, because the kid played great and made probably the play of the game with his sideline contested catch, but without looking at it, why do I have a feeling I am going to see something like Tomlin playing 45 snaps and Griffin 8.

6. That was a spectacular catch by Griffin in the end zone.

7. Nobody has been able to run the ball on NCST all year but a little creativity may have at least been worth a try. There was no running up the middle yet BC kept trying. Maybe a few outside runs? Probably wouldn’t have mattered , NC St D line is good and their linebackers are exceptional.

8. Doeren TOB’ed it, with the rum on 3rd and 7, but truthfully I think it was the right call. Your QB was making some really bad decisions, and the odds of BC going 70 yards in under 3 minutes was probably no more than 10%

9. Solid game from Longman. His last punt was a very important play in the outcome of this game.

10. Zay was sensational in the first half. What a player. I couldn’t see enough but NCST played him 1v1 in the first half, my guess is that his lack of targets in the second half was a result of different coverage.

11. The refs really had a tough game with so much going against BC, however if I was a neutral observer I would have said no call on the Griffin pass interference. Game on the line, and that very easily could have been a no call.

12. As could have been the call on Batson. He deserved to get penalized for his lack of situational awareness, it was 3rd and 22 and the qb was 15 yards from the 1st down marker. However as someone who has never played football but posts like an expert, my guess is that fine line of a split second decision of pulling off a tackle at full speed is a lot more difficult live than it shows on tv.

13. I actually thought the OL played better as the game wore on. They couldn’t run block at all but they found multiple snaps down the stretch where they gave Morehead 3 plus seconds with a clean pocket.

14. This was of course aided by the fact that the NCST defense was on the field the entire second half. BC controlled the clock in the 2nd half.

15. Injuries and strength and conditioning have been recurring issues for BC all year, but credit to all involved for grinding to the end. NCST was the home team and this was their climate and they were being dragged off the field one by one in the 4th quarter.

16. From the 2nd series on in today, the DL was the best unit on the field. They have been much maligned but they were dominant down the stretch. Completely shut the home side down. Where has that been all year? There are a few future pieces that really showed today.

17. This is going to be an awkward week with the handling of Jurk in the media, and I am not sure there is an easy answer. This is ND week and certainly a very personal one for Jurk. Haf, has always and should protect Jurk. However this is now Morehead’s team. Absent an injury to Morehead, if Jurk sees another meaningful minute this year then Haf deserves heavy criticism. Morehead needs to be named the starter. Had cannot come out and say what he did last week in that it’s Jurk’s team if he is healthy. The only way I see that serves all purposes is to announce that Jurk is out for the year, on Monday. Put an end to it

18. Congratulations to all maroon and golders!!

ND/Navy

Irish rolled up over 300 yards in the first half to lead 35-13
They never scored again in the second half and gained an incredibly dismal 12 yards
At one point Navy sacked the QB 3 out of 4 plays
One reason Irish had so little offense in second half was that Navy took second half kickoff and held the ball for a few seconds less than 10 minutes
