Being A College Fan Getting Tougher

You know the old saying: Can't tell the players without a scorecard? It has never been truer and never more difficult to be the scorecard maker.

For many years we all have studied the high school players and their high-lite tapes. We learn their names and try to discern the likelihood they might go to BC to bolster this or that area of the team's need. When we are fortunate enough to get a commitment we hope it sticks and we even aim to flip a player or two from elsewhere. We check the recruiting stars and see how the team ranking ends up to help us decide if we are headed in the right direction.

Now we have little idea from month to month who will be on our team, much less who will be "BC Guys" for life. The historic reality of thinking we'll be good the next year because we know their names (a foolish idea but nonetheless real) has been replaced by having little idea who the hell half or more of them are. That seems a hard way to build fan loyalty, much less team loyalty.

Then again, loyalty has become a pretty self-related notion at this point.

A few recruiting notes....

With today being September 1st coaches can now reach out to high school juniors directly for the first time, so if you follow recruiting on social media you'll start to get a sense for which players the Eagles are looking at from that class. We'll highlight some of those guys and contact a lot of them for stories.

This is not going to be BC's biggest recruiting weekend of the year since it's Colgate but there will be some visitors.

The big thing is most of Lawrence Academy's players will be in the stands and getting the whole VIP treatment.

Boston College has offered '24 quarterback Ryan Pugliese, who they regard as a really good pro-style prospect. He may well come into focus as "the" guy they're wanting to lock up from that cycle. Ole Miss and Temple have also offered but there's already a relationship there in spite of his youth.

There don't seem to be concerns about the status of Matt Ragan's commitment to BC but getting locals on campus frequently is always a good sign that those relationships are strong.

Ty Chan is committed to ND but he's not going to be in attendance.

Also hearing that commits Joe Griffin and Ish Zamor are expected to be unofficial visitors this weekend. Again, the relationships with these high schools is very strong and that has been a priority. Because of what BC's doing in the pass game the reception from receivers has been very strong and they're sensing guys are really excited to play in the offense.

I think the Missouri and Florida State games could be the biggest in terms of pushing for guys to visit but they also seem to be playing it by ear. If they go on a run with several wins in a row they'll probably try to parlay that into a big weekend.
