I don't know enough about physics and meteorology - but what if an atomic bomb were dropped into the eye of this type of storm when it was over uninhabited ocean? Would that disrupt it? End it? Or have no effect or make things worse? Edit: Found the answer: this idea had originally been floated in 1961 - aside from the problem of radioactive fallout, apparently there just isn't enough energy in even the biggest bombs to move enough air to affect the storm meaningfully!
