At about this time two years ago I started a thread seeking some thoughts about our oldest daughter's difficult decision between UMass and taking on debt to attend BC. Well, now it is our second daughter's turn to decide. This one is turning out to be even more stressful. For me. No, she was not accepted to BC. She wants to study film. I am an engineer so film is no where near my comfort zone. Everything I have read or heard says that film is among the worse possible degrees to pursue. Few jobs, low pay, long hours, don't really need a degree, etc.

She was turned down by her top two choices, USC and Loyola Marymount, but she has been accepted to Emerson. They are also giving her merit money. She will still have to take out a loan and work a few hours at school but it should be manageable. My wife and I suggested to her that she should at least pursue two degrees and she agreed that it was a good idea. Unfortunately, Emerson will not let her double major. She applied to UMass because we told her too, and was accepted into Isenberg. It's not BC, but it is a good B-School. They have a film program but they only offer a certificate, not a degree. She has pretty much made up her mind to go to Emerson. I feel like Nostradamus and forsee the life of a struggling artist.

Is anyone out here in the film industry, or know someone who is? Am I being overly concerned?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Oh, and for those that might be interested. Her older sister is having a great experience at UMass. She was accepted into the honors college her Freshman year, joined a sorority, is tutoring athletes (I'm not so thrilled about that), dances with a group on campus and has close to a 4.0 GPA. She would still have preferred to go to BC if it weren't for the money, but doesn't regret her decision at all. With some of the money she has saved she is paying to fly to Peru in May to teach English to underprivileged children.
