It's taken a little while and the details are still a little foggy from where I'm sitting, but this is with regard to Devan Lawson's decommitment recently.
Lawson wanted to continue to visit other schools even after he committed to Boston College. The problem is, he wanted to visit schools that he didn't even have offers to. If you're talking about a kid like Bryce Morais from Georgia or someone that you really feel 'fortunate' to have, you don't have as much leverage there. And when a kid has other significant offers it's tougher to tell him not to take visits. But when you've got a kid visiting other Power Five schools that haven't offered, that's a sign that he's probably not all that solid. Or doesn't understand that he's got a really good setup and one that he's probably fortunate to have. Now, was he taking those visits just to help get his teammate exposure? I'm not sure.
Anyways, BC didn't want him visiting other schools because they wanted to be able to count on his commitment.
However, it wasn't BC that pulled the rug out from under him. He apparently reached out to the coaches and just told them he wanted to decommit. I think it might have been related to not being on the same page about taking other visits.
It's a risky move for Lawson considering he doesn't have any other Power Five offers.
I'm told he never expressed any concerns about Patrick Brown's commitment from California.
I'm also told there's still a real possibility BC could take two tight ends. Initially that was not the plan, but it seems they may be moving in that direction.
