“Boston College Head Football Coach Bill O’Brien and the Eagles football team will be joined by Alison Crowther, mother of Welles Crowther ’99, at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on December 26 at 9:30 a.m. The team will pay tribute at the bronze parapets, where Welles' name is etched in remembrance, and place a red bandanna—symbolizing his heroism—on his inscription before entering the museum.

Set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers and archaeological heart of the World Trade Center site, the team will experience the story of 9/11 through media, narratives and a collection of artifacts detailing personal stories of loss, recovery and hope.

Each year, BC honors Welles with its annual Red Bandanna Game. The red bandanna was a defining feature used to identify Welles, who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Welles, known to survivors as “The Man in the Red Bandanna” is credited with saving at least one dozen people in the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

Welles played lacrosse at BC and worked as an equities trader in New York, on the 104th floor of the South Tower, following graduation. BC began its Red Bandanna Game tradition in 2014 with a 37-31 upset of No. 9 USC. This season, the Eagles picked up an emotional, 23-19, come-from-behind win over Michigan State in the rain, under the Alumni Stadium lights.

Welles’ parents, Alison and the late Jefferson, are cornerstones of the tradition. Alison continues the work of honoring her son’s memory through the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, which recognizes and awards academic and athletic excellence in young men and women who serve their communities through education, health, recreation and character development. Beyond the annual Red Bandanna Game, BC and Alison honor Welles with the Welles Crowther Red Bandanna 5K.”
