Notes from BC Practice: October 16th

-A lot more playing today, so got a chance to see the guys in action

-Luka can shoot the ball and is a good passer, but I’m not sure he can dunk it (in a game)--he’s 6’9”--and his arms are pretty short. It’ll be interesting to see how the coaching staff feels about him defensively.

-Vin Baker Jr. is a guard at this point. Too skinny to matchup with a lot of forwards, but he is really skilled on the offensive end. Can shoot the deep ball well and can make a play for himself or a teammate. Smart player too. I was really impressed by him at practice today. Probably more of an impact player down the road--once he stops growing and can put on some muscle--and could see him filling that “Tayshaun Prince” mold.

-Steffon is really smart defensively. Has a natural awareness of where players are and is good at recognizing a mistake early. Regardless of his role on this team, he’ll be a switchable defender who can guard 3’s and 4’s pretty easily.

-The staff is really high on Hawkins. Coaches believe his experience and age will be one of the biggest advantages he has. He has 92 games under his belt and is 24 years old and will be playing against kids who are 18 years old. Really good finisher around the rim. They believe his natural position is the 4, but the staff is stressing "position-less" basketball this year so expect him to play everywhere.

-Pop is in really good shape. Running the floor well and is dunking balls he would’ve laid up last year.

-Chatman is really focusing on his ability to attack the basket--last year he shot a poor 42% inside the arc--and any versatility they can get from him will be a big plus.

-JCR getting a lot of reps at practice and his touch around the basket seems to be improving.
