Boston College men's basketball is in play for Class of 2023 prospect Fred Payne, a 6-foot-2 guard from Spring Creek Legacy School (Texas) who revealed his top five Monday.

Payne is also considering North Texas, Tulane, Houston and Saint Louis. He made an official visit to BC earlier this month.

Payne ran through his top five with Patrick O'Brien of Phenom Hoops this week. This is what he had to say about BC:

"I went on a visit there and it was great. Loved the coaching staff and how they are winning. They are building a special program, also like their guard play."

Payne's recruiting really took off after he averaged 14 points per game at Big Shots Prep Nationals, a three-day event in February that featured 96 teams from the United States and Canada.

He's a lefty combo guard that can score at all three levels. Payne's got quick burst, a nice handle and isn't afraid to attack the paint. He likes to play with a fast pace, but he's a purposeful defender, too, which, of course, fits with the culture BC head coach Earl Grant created in his first year at the program's helm.

BC is bringing in two freshman guards next season: three-star Chas Kelley and four star DJ Hand. Both are part of the Eagles' monumental 2022 recruiting class—the first BC class to include two four-star signees since Rivals.com starting tracking recruiting data in 2002.

BC is still searching for its first commit in the 2023 cycle.
