Tyler Thompson, a three-star running back from Ocean Township High School in Oakhurst, NJ, has verbally committed to the Minutemen, according to a Maroon Musket recruiting source. Thompson is a top 100 running back nationally and chose UMass over offers from the likes of Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse and others.
He committed during a coaching visit in New Jersey, according to a source.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect had 1,572 yards and 21 touchdowns during his senior campaign. For his career, he had nearly 5,000 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns. He amassed those numbers despite missing part of the 2014 season with a broken leg.
Thompson is the third-highest-rated prospect on UMass' commitment board, behind only wide receiver Brennon Dingle and athlete Cycoby Burch.
