Have been working the phones on more topics and obviously a big one is the recent addition of a pair of three-star linebackers, former Syracuse commitment Isaiah McDuffie and well-known Jersey 'backer Paul Theobald.
On Theobald: I'm told that he is almost certainly an inside linebacker. One person told me he is looking like a Mike in BC's defense as of right now. Always subject to change at this point. He's got really good size, apparently. The BC staff likes that he's from Seton Hall Prep and that's a place they know well and have good relationships at.
On McDuffie: So apparently there was a situation with the new Syracuse guys and McDuffie. There wasn't a lot of communication and there was even the appearance of the 'Cuse backing off. On matters such as these there is a ton of spin, as I'm sure Syracuse people would say that they did back off, and I would expect BC people to say that's not true.
Sources close to BC were honestly just surprised when I spoke with them this week. They really didn't expect someone like McDuffie to be in a situation like that and I don't think they were really angsting over whether to take him or not. They seem pretty happy that he kind of fell into their lap.
A person told me that McDuffie is probably right at 212 or 213 pounds, so he's bigger than some thing. "He is definitely an athletic guy," I was also told. "He could go Division I and play running back or linebacker." They see him as a difference maker, but at linebacker for sure.
As with their other New York commitments, the issue of competition and its impact on the kid's offers arose in conversation. On this kid I was told, "You dominate competition like you're supposed to, you stand out on film." They just aren't worried about the competition thing. And: "He's definitely a bona fide player. I think in the long run he could be an NFL player."
And honestly, I've covered recruiting a lot of years and a lot of places. I don't hear BC guys talk that boldly. They tend to take a more low key, humble, grounded approach to who they've got. But they really think he's got that kind of athleticism and potential.
They also like his passion on defense and think he's going to work as hard as it takes.
