Roughly a year ago today instead of preparing to go to Gillette Stadium to see BC play UMass in the season opener I was headed to Dana Farber for my third of what would be 18 Chemo Therapy Sessions over six months for the treatment of Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL. Due to my treatment I missed attending the entire 2014 season of home games. The home games that I have missed since I have been a season ticket holder in 1982 were few and usually involved a death or wedding that could not be missed. I did get to see last years games on TV but it is not the same as being at the game and excitement and camaraderie that comes with the games. I am so excited to be going back to BC today to see a live football game and tailgate and celebrate with family and friends.
My treatments went extremely well and I have my health back. Dana Farber is an amazing facility that I hope you never have the need for. However if you do get cancer it is the place to go. We are so lucky to have such a facility in Boston. My Doctor, a Holy Cross undergrad and Harvard Medical School, and my Nurse Practitioner, she has two doctorates from Harvard including one in Medical Statistics, were amazing in selecting the correct treatment for me. It included an experimental drug that accelerated my recovery and hopefully will become a part of the regular treatment for future patients. The nurses who work at Dana Farber are amazing. They never have a bad day and will do anything to make you feel better and make your treatments easier.
Dana Farber is also a very humbling place. As sick as I might have been you look around and see so many people who are in far worse condition than you are. You feel so lucky to be only as sick as you are compared to others.
On September 27th my oldest daughter will be doing the Jimmy Fund Cancer Walk to benefit Dana Farber. It is a wonderful cause and she would appreciate any support you could provide. You can make a donation at www.jimmyfundwalk.org/2015/mktoomey.
