Talk about it in The Eagles Nest

How does Ray Marten fit into BC's plans for the future? That's whatEagleAction.com breaks down right now.

Leonard and the BC staff liked Marten for a variety of reasons.
The Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep tight end committed to the Eagles at the start of the summer and tight end is the position he will be playing for BC - sort of. He's not a tight end in the purest, most commonly understood sense of that label right now, nor will he be that at Boston College.

"BC wants me for like an H-Back tight end position," Marten toldEagleAction.com recently. "It's a mixture of a tight end and fullback. They haven't given me specifics yet but that's what they've said."

That's not new to Marten.

"That's been my main position in high school," he said. "I've been doing the same thing here. I feel very comfortable doing that. In high school I've been a motioning tight end my whole, entire four years. I haven't really played with my hand in the dirt. I've been more motioning, in the flats, like an H-Back position."

While versatility is something BC prized in Marten, it's a positive from where the coaches are sitting that his primary position now is the position they will want him to play. That should make the transition more seamless, and it will allow Marten to zero in on improving in set, specific areas with some confidence that it will benefit him next year.

Although Marten is listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds he told EagleAction.com that he's actually 240 pounds right now. He's comfortable in his frame and he wants to put on weight "correctly," so by the time he gets to BC he wants to be 250 pounds with no bad weight. That would mean he would probably be ready to contribute very early, when coupled with his time spent at the position.

So what does Marten bring to the table?

"My high school team's a run-first team. I've been a blocker most of my time here. I think my blocking is pretty good," Marten said. "I can clear a hole, kick someone out or reach block you. I can do about anything in terms of blocking. When we do throw the ball I think I have pretty good hands. I run routes pretty well. I'm pretty well-rounded. Along with my size and my speed that's why I think I can be a mismatch and a threat to the defense in the secondary."
