More recruiting notes on this Wednesday afternoon right here.
I've continued asking around about recent quarterback commitment Austin Burton following his commitment to BC and subsequent surprise offer from UCLA. First, just some background information. Burton did indeed go out to UCLA to camp. I'm told from someone who wasn't there but who had heard about it that Burton did very well, but the UCLA coaches were reluctant to offer because he wasn't a local guy (maybe just one reason).
When Burton committed to Boston College, UCLA's coaches may have decided that they really did like Burton enough to think of him as a potential signee, and they didn't want to wait too long before BC got all the traction and established a firm grip on him. Kind of just getting in his ear quickly. This is obviously very easy for BC to spin and it may not be spin at all. UCLA apparently really likes quarterback Jack Sears, so is Burton even their top choice? They'll certainly be able to tell Burton that they liked him enough to take him right away, while UCLA mulled around and maybe took him for granted as someone they "could" get later on.
I've also asked around about which players committed to other schools the Eagles might be targeting. "The local guys," I'm told.
Running back A.J. Dillon and linebacker Blake Gallagher are the two names that immediately came up in conversations I had recently. Dillon is the most obvious candidate for a flip that BC's coaches would love. For a number of reasons, not least of which the fact that he's a running back, and they want a running back badly. From what I'm told, BC people are encouraged that Michigan's taking a lot of other talented guys at various spots, and they believe their staff in Ann Arbor may want to ultimately convert Dillon to another position. BC is apparently still in good, regular contact with Dillon, so there's at least that.
I believe they're also still in contact with Gallagher. Staying in touch is just regular practice in recruiting. But, they feel like they could have a shot in the long run. The big question is whether Gallagher just wants to get away from home, in which case it'll be tough to flip him.
The big lineman Andrew Stueber got his dream offer recently and he could be tough to flip so I don't think they're going to heavily invest time or energy in recruiting him much more.
