Cam Newton is not a thug in my opinion, nor is he a sham. He is simply an immature man who isn't very substantive at this point in his life. His behavior after that game was not shocking to me. His demeanor reeks of individualism. Its like the Brown feeling betrayed by Johnny Manziel. They new exactly what they were getting with him, which was a ticking time bomb.
Unfortunately, there are many young kids who look up to Newton. Personally, I don't believe it's Newton's job to be a role model, but the breakdown of Dads in homes has in my opinion forced it upon these athletes.
Some I think have embraced it, while others like Newton, have ignored it. Please don't tout paying for a youth camp as being a role model.
They say sports do not create character, but instead reveals character. I think it revealed a lot about who Cam Newton is now on Sunday. If for one second after the game Newton would have thought about someone other than himself, he would have realized he had a teachable moment sitting directly in his lap. He could have taken ownership of everything, even though, no QB would have succeeded in that environment on Sunday against the Broncos. Saying that it wasn't really anything the Broncos did falls in the face of logic and demonstrates further that Newton simply doesn't get it or worse yet, maybe doesn't want to get it.
What a message he could have sent. Even Superman makes mistakes, even Superman is vulnerable, but Superman will learn from this and get better. Pretty corny stuff and probably not near as newsworthy I suppose, but it may have resinated with some young person sitting at home wearing his jersey or pretending to be him while out playing somewhere.
