Here's Part II: A look at PFF's grades for BC's defensive players.
Defensive Line
Tanner Karafa - 75.0
Ray Smith - 74.0
Marcus Valdez - 71.0
TJ Rayam - 70.0
Bryce Morais - 65.7
Jaleel Berry - 52.8
Inside the Grades: Tackling was a real problem, PFF says, for Marcus Valdez (29.6 tackling grade) and TJ Rayam (26.6). Those players saw 300 and 127 snaps respectively, so every missed tackle affected their grade there quite a bit. Valdez was otherwise solid playing assignment football against the run, as was Rayam. The best mark for any defensive lineman at any task was Karafa against the run (85.2). None of the players listed in this category posted higher than a 64.8 pass rush grade.
Edge
Zach Allen - 91.2
Thomas Hovsepian - 77.2 (5 snaps)
Drew McQuarrie - 70.4 (22 snaps)
Wyatt Ray - 67.2
Brandon Barlow - 63.8
Reggie Terry - 60.8 (4 snaps)
Isaiah Miranda - 55.7
Inside the Grades: Allen's lowest category grade was a 70.5 in tackling, and that alone says something (well above average). He was 87.9 in run defense, 90.5 in rushing the passer and even 75.3 in coverage, quite impressive for a player such as he is. In addition to his season sack and TFL totals, PFF credited him with 18 additional hits on the quarterback and 36 rushes that caused the quarterback to hurry the ball out. Ray was average or slightly above in most categories except in coverage where his 39.8 grade stands out (small sample: 4/4 completions)
Linebacker
Vinny DePalma - 77.2
Max Richardson - 75.1
Isaiah McDuffie - 74.1
Kevin Bletzer - 73.8
Connor Strachan - 73.6
Curt Bletzer - 69.1
Joseph Sparacio - 64.8
Davon Jones - 64.7
John Lamot - 58.1
Inside the Grades: Strachan was stout against the run (77.6 run defense grade) and the only thing he was knocked for was an average pass rush grade. Max Richardson's strong grade was bolstered by an 81.4 coverage grade, by far the best among BC's linebackers. While he allowed 70% completions, he suppressed yards after the catch (just over 100 on 17 receptions) and allowed only one score with two pass breakups. Lamot's best mark was in the tackling category but he struggled rushing the passer and in run defense settings. McDuffie was solid but unspectacular across the board in all categories.
Defensive Back
Hamp Cheevers - 88.5
Taj-Amir Torres - 82.8
Brandon Sebastian - 77.4
Will Harris - 76.2
Elijah Jones - 73.7
Mike Palmer - 73.2
Mehdi El Attrach - 71.6
Tate Haynes - 68.2
Nolan Borgersen - 65.4
Jahmin Muse - 64.1
Lukas Denis - 59.2
Jason Maitre - 56.3
Ben Stewart - 55.0
Inside the Grades: PFF charged Lukas Denis with 15 missed tackles on the season, the most for any player on BC's team. That produced a 53.6 tackling grade which dragged down his overall mark. Hamp Cheevers allowed 46.7% completions and three touchdowns, with throws his way being picked seven times, broken up five more, and an overall passer rating of 39.5 (NFL) allowed. Cheevers' coverage grade was over 90 on the season and Torres' was well above 80.
