Tonight I experienced a new low in following Boston College. Surfing channels I went to Pardon the Interruption on ESPN and saw listed in the upcoming topics B.C. Huh, I thought, couldn't be.
Waited and watched and it was. Opened with statement What's Up with Boston College. Statements about BC started the conference movement among schools by leaving the Big East and did it for the money. Heard something to the effect that ACC is a conference they don't even belong in. Showed clip of losing against NC State, said that BC is positioned the be the only major school to go without a victory in conference play in the same year for both basketball and football in the past forty years. Both commentators said they felt sorry for the players.
One saying goes that you have to hit bottom before you can start on the path to recovery. I always try to see the positive but man, seeing that really is a downer. Brought a feeling embarrassment, sadness and frustrated about how others perceive the brand. But the evidence is clear, isn't it? Perfect storm or not, plenty of blame to go around and one thing that really rings within me is that BC is so uneven in it positive protestations versus actions related to revenue sports and the game day experience. I wonder if perhaps local political correctness is killing their ability to be all in or all out.
From administration slowness on facilities (which I defended) to coaches, to recruiting, just a total eclipse today, darkness. I want to see positive light ahead but damage has been done that requires exceeded expectations for multiple years to begin repairs. Next year is either pivot point or sliding towards a bottomless pit and the school and every BC athletics employee is on the clock. Will they respond to the urgency? Come on BC athletics, earn the right to regain our belief in Ever to Excel which today feels too much like Never to Excel.
