I have not entered the discussion on Donald Trump until now. I guess I haven't known which way to come down on him. As a moderate, so many of the groups I typically distrust dislike him so much, I really wanted to give him a chance.
It is interesting how this all works. The Democrats hate him. The mainstream Republicans absolutely abhor him. The "Wall Street Journal" and "The New York Times" can not criticize him enough. The Pope, the President of Mexico, most Communist Leaders and all of Europe and Asia can't stand him and think he is incredibly dangerous. Even Fox News is generally negative on the guy. The last group that somewhat supports him is Talk Radio and they would prefer Cruz.
Personally, I find him egotistical, pompous and arrogant. I think he doesn't know when to shut up. He has never held political office and yet has rallied a large section of our population by appealing to our lesser selves. He is a Populist who raps our economic and social fears in the banner of nationalism. (I personally drew the line when he attacked Megan Kelly. ) He also manipulates mass and social media better than any political figure in the history of mankind. In short, I find him scary.
Despite what my wife says, there is another side. The guy is really not a racist or a sexest or a homophobe. If you follow his past, he is actually moderate on most social issues beside immigration. With no outside funding, he is not beholding to special interest groups. He actually understands business and international trade, labor unions and how to negotiate with foreign countries. He has run businesses and knows how to do it profitable. He also knows when to shut them down when they are not profitable and not working. He is aggressive and willing to try new things. And he knows how to find good people and build an organization. Finally, he really gets branding and will work to build and improve the United States brand in the world. He also appears to be a good father and seems to have done a pretty good job with his kids despite the frequency of his marriages.
So is Donald my first choice? Of course not. Again, I find him scary. Unfortunately, our other option will likely be Hillary. Can you imagine listening to hear talk for the next four to eight years? She will do whatever she can to make us a third world country in the name of fairness or some such thing.
