Granted that the fact that FIFA was rife with corruption was well known, but the extent of the direct involvement of governments and the size of the bribes involved is mind boggling to me. The scandal could lead to the fall of governments in football crazy countries like Brasil
The question I have is with the corruption of FIFA and some of the member state organizations being apparently so deep seated, were the World Cup preliminary games being rigged by the officials The amount of money being bet on these games worldwide has to run into the tens of millions of dollars. And if no one was minding the store at FIFA, who was keeping the officials honest. I enjoy watching World Cup games but know very little about the rules and the discretion officials are supposed to have in making calls. I would appreciate the comments of someone knowledgible about the game as to how hard it would be for an official to direct the outcome without causing a riot in the stadium
