Denver
For the benefit of casual hockey fans I offer the following: BC plays Denver in the NCAA hockey tournament Saturday at 3 PM ET at Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence. Winner advances to the regional championship and a possible trip to the Frozen Four held in Boston April 9-11.
Univ. of Denver Pioneers have a record of 23-13-2 this year very similar to BC's 21-13-3 record. These team played each other in October in Denver with each getting a 2-1 victory in 2 game series. DU is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, a new league which started in 2011 after the old WCHA fell apart when stalwarts Minnesota and Wisconsin departed for the new Big 10 conference. The NCHC is loaded with traditional hockey powers besides Denver, North Dakota, Minn. St (Mankato) Minn Duluth, Colorado College, Miami (Ohio) St Cloud St. (Minn) and relative newcomers Neb. Omaha and West. Mich belong. The league has placed 6 teams in the NCAA t'ment this year far more than any other conference.
Denver started playing intercollegiate hockey in 1949 the same year BC won its first championship and has been a power ever since winning 7 frozen four titles tied with No. Dakota for second alltime (Michigan is #1 with 9.)
DU is coached by Jim Montgomery, well known for having captained Maine's 1993 national championship team, playing in the NHL and being an assistant at RPI for 4 years, he is from Montreal.
The Pioneers are led by 3 seniors and a junior Joey LeLeggia sr. defenseman and Hobey candidate, Ty Loney sr. forward
Daniel Doremus also a senior forward and junior Quentin Shore junior defenseman, two Canadians and two Americans.
DU traditionally recruited from Canada's prairie provinces but todays team comes mainly from the US.
Last year in the same game BC beat DU 6-2 just after the Pioneers won the NCHC t'ment championship and Eagles advanced to the Frozen Four. DU has not forgotten this beating and this year's game should be a close contest.
