Boston College's first summer session camp (June 18-21) is in the books and I've been working the phones with players and sources to gather information on how it went.
All in all I'd say it was a pretty eventful camp. BC netted a commitment out of it and that's not a surprise. But they also offered three quarterbacks coming out of the event. That doesn't always happen.
More on the McQuarrie commitment
There's no doubt that McQuarrie will be a tight end at Boston College. I know I wrote that his film wasn't bad, but they like him a lot more at tight end than quarterback and having had some conversations I don't think quarterback will be in the cards at any point.
I'm told that McQuarrie camped all four days. So did his younger brother, a Class of 2019 prospect. They were accompanied by their mother.
Someone I spoke with said he's definitely a very good athlete and he's a legit 6-foot-6 and between 220 and 230 pounds. He seems really all in with Boston College and I think his recruitment has probably ended, for all practical purposes.
The run on tight ends continues
I've joked with sources on and off that it seems like BC takes more tight end commitments than any other school in the country. This is acknowledged as a trend specific to Boston College.
In part it's schematic. Some schools have moved away from the traditional tight end. Some use strictly the traditional tight end.
The way BC wants to run their offense, it just happens that they like everything ranging from tight ends to H-Backs and fullback hybrids.
It's also in part due to the fact that Boston College just has the kind of identity as a program that makes it an attractive fit for tight ends, including some they really like.
It's like that Jake Burt will miss the 2015 season and they already have Mike Giacone coming back from an injury. They'll point to Stanford as an example of another program that uses a lot of tight ends and variations successfully within the kind of power-based, balanced offense that they want to run.
Notes on the three quarterbacks offered
Austin Burton was once an in-state recruit but he transferred to Florida where he's likely to garner more attention. The Class of 2017 quarterback picked up an offer from the Eagles a couple of days ago.
I'm told he had a pretty good showing at the camp. He's tall enough. They want guys that are at least 6-foot-2 or thereabouts, and they don't care about his speed. He threw the ball well, kept a nice spiral and has always reciprocated BC's interest.
Wouldn't be surprised if he selects the Eagles. Apparently that's one he's been waiting on and sources feel good.
Troy Fisher, a 2018 quarterback from Central Catholic in Pittsburgh, is another guy behind center that was offered coming out of this camp. Apparently they love his size and think "he can sling it."
They also offered Class of 2018 quarterback Justin Fields from Georgia and they were very impressed by him. He's a dual-threat from Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison.
Miscellaneous
Class of 2019 running back/receiver Bryce Sebastian, the younger brother of Brandon (the BC commit), was fantastic. I asked a source about him and they were pretty blown away that he did so well -- especially testing-wise -- for such a young guy. You have to feel like BC will have a chance because of his brother, but I also think people around the program believe he's got a lot more offers coming. Could really be a big-time kid. Not the biggest guy but he's only a rising high school sophomore and will keep growing.
They offered a tight end named Hunter Long and I'm hearing the staff liked his measurements and his overall camp performance. He's from Exeter and they feel like as a local kid he can be a guy they've got a good shot with.
Cedar Creek's team showed up and that meant there was a Rutgers commit or two in attendance.
Kadeem Trotter, a LB/S from Ohio, was another impressive guy. I did an update with quotes from him recently and although he excelled as a safety he could play that or linebacker.
