We have talked in these threads about what ails the BC FB program. My view about Daz is that he exceeded expectations in his first two years and has underperformed this year. Was this underperformance more the result of the Program finally paying the tab for the Spaz years, or issues with Daz's coaching/recruiting, or a combination of both. I think it is too early to tell. IMO, the guy does deserve a mulligan year and this is that year. I think we will have a better handle on these questions come the end of next season, so I am reserving an opinion on his tenure until then.
I do, however, have concerns about the tenure of BB and am starting to come to the same view as those expressed in other threads. Specifically, that BB is in over his head as a P5 AD at a school like BC.
Don't get me wrong, I think BB is a very nice guy and a principled man who cares about the athletes and is receptive to fans. He has done some good things - the video boards and Brighton tailgating primarily - but these things are the low hanging fruit.
My specific concerns:
1. No announcement of a facilties master plan - now almost THREE YEARS after it was promised. During this time, local colleges with athletics that I think can be fairly characterized as at much lower levels compared to BC, like Babson and now Holy Cross, have announced new facilties, including indoor practice facilities. BB claims that things are ongoing behind the scenes, but come on, THREE YEARS of radio silence!! To not understand the importance of this issue to the fan base and the angst that zero communication on it is causing (especially after promising a detailed plan years ago), is quite disturbing, IMO. The fact that facilities development is so closely aligned to fund raising only gives me added concerns about how this part of the job is likewise being handled!
2. The Uconn scheduling. BB has been at BC long enough to understand how emotional this issue is with the BC fan base. Yet, he obviously engages in substantive talk with Uconn about a FB series without even so much as a peep of communication to the BC fan base. This could have been done in fan town halls, emails, open letters, etc. He could have asked for our input. Instead, we have to hear about this through Blauds, of all people! Furthermore, If Blauds' reporting is true, BC did no better than a 50-50 home-away arrangement with Uconn (meaning likely games at the Rent!) and, even worse, there doesn't appear to be any tie-in to basketball. If all this is indeed true (realizing we have to wait for official announcements) then, IMO, we have squandered what should be our leverage in this whole issue.
3. Coaching selection. So far, I am OK with the Christian MBB hire. In my view, he inherited a sh**tshow much worse than the FB situation and has managed to make progress by upgrading the talent and bringing a steady hand to the Program. Under any circumstances, this Program will take awhile to turn around, IMO. Still, while a change needed to be made and the end result was fine, the process was embarrassing, IMO. After the end of the season, SD was left twisting in the wind for, what?, 8 days? (after reportedly being told mid-season that his job was safe). Not one of the better moments in BC athletics, IMO!
As I have said before, I desperately want BB to prove me wrong! I would be happy - no, strike that, I WANT to come back on here and eat crow on this issue. I am praying that BB gives me that reason to do so!! So far, however.....
