Earlier this week Mike Palmer told me that he was anticipating that he would be ready to commit to Boston College on Wednesday. His official visit went well. My belief is he just wanted to go home, talk with the people he needed to get input from, think things over, make sure he was making the right choice, and then finalize everything (verbally at least).
As he told us earlier in the week Boston College had been in touch with Palmer much earlier this year, in the spring semester. If you're wondering why nothing came from that until recently then consider the way the scholarship crunch has been wildly in flux this year.
When BC was at around 10 commitments we were hearing that the Eagles might just take five more guys, if that. Now we're looking at BC taking upwards of 22 guys, perhaps, and maybe more. That's an enormous expansion of scholarship availability and when you're dealing with a number crunch and the realities of a recruiting board and what you need by position it's not surprising that someone who was "wait and see" would become a take.
BC had told Palmer they wanted to know his decision relatively soon because with so much work to do before Signing Day you need to lock in a couple of guys to get yourself some wiggle room. There may be some guys who aren't so easy to lock up and the fewer spots you have still to fill the more comfortable you feel about the final product on Signing Day.
Palmer attends Maine Edwell in New York and had previously been offered by Army and Wagner.
I believe he'll be a defensive back for Boston College and he's probably someone who can play multiple positions in the secondary. Safety might be the most likely scenario but he may also be good enough in coverage to get some time at corner.
The coaches love his size (6-foot-1) and although he does have some filling out to do you need as many guys with length as possible to match up with the bigger receivers you'll face. My understanding is Palmer could also help out as a return man and the coaches think he has good potential at that craft.
Information is still coming in on BC's newest commitment but we can say based on local news reports that are available online he's been a significant contributor as both a receiver and a defensive back for at least each of the last two years, dating back to when he was a junior.
Haven't heard whether he might be an early enrollee but if so that would certainly make him even more attractive.
