Tracking BC's 2022 Departing Transfers

Boston College men's basketball added Cincinnati 3-and-D wing Mason Madsen earlier this week. Before the Madsen news, however, the Eagles saw three players enter the transfer portal: guards Kanye Jones and Brevin Galloway, plus center Justin Vander Baan.

A while after, Gianni Thompson also put his name in the portal.

Here are stories about each of those players:
Here at Eagle Action, we’ll be tracking where they end up as well as monitoring if any other BC players depart for the portal.

G Kanye Jones → Buffalo

Jones, a 6-foot-4 Orlando native, averaged 9.7 minutes per game for the Eagles in 2021-22 while shooting just 19-of-72 from the floor, including 10-of-41 from deep. As ACC play wore on, Jones and fellow freshman Gianni Thompson were given a chance to contribute, partly due to injuries to Brevin Galloway, TJ Bickerstaff and even DeMarr Langford Jr. Jones ended up playing 10-plus minutes in six league contests. He had his moments, like when he knocked down a 3-pointer at Notre Dame to keep BC alive in overtime or when he piled up eight points in a Feb. 21 win over Florida State. But Jones never seemed to figure out things defensively, and he struggled to take care of the ball (0.7 turnovers per game). He's headed to a Buffalo program that's consistently competitive in the MAC. The Bulls, who offered him when he was a three-star recruit, have made the NCAA Tournament four times in the last eight years.

F Gianni Thompson → UMass

It didn't take long for Thompson to find a new destination. Less than a week after he entered the portal, he committed to UMass. New head coach Frank Martin was a motivating factor in Thompson's decision, he told Boston.com. Thompson is a local product who played his high school ball at Brimmer and May School in Newton. He was a three-star recruit and committed to BC while Jim Christian was still the Eagles' head coach. Thompson stuck with BC as the program transitioned to the Earl Grant era. He was a bit behind in development as a freshman but ended up averaging 7.5 minutes per game, playing in 15 ACC contests this past season. Although the 6-foot-8 forward converted just 9-of-28 field goal attempts, he was 4-of-12 from downtown. Thompson may have moved on from BC, but he's staying in his home state.

G Brevin Galloway → Clemson

Galloway is on his way to his hometown school: Clemson. It's a fitting destination, considering he met then-Tigers assistant Earl Grant there when he was just 10 years old. Galloway ended up playing his first four years of his career at College of Charleston and then came over to BC with Grant. Knee injuries have limited Galloway the past two seasons, but he seems to be back to full strength now. He'll be joining a Clemson team that he took down with five 3-pointers, including a game-winner, this past season in Littlejohn Coliseum. Galloway averaged 8.3 points and 1.1 steals per game in 2021-22, except he shot only 30.8% from the floor. Clemson has made two of the last four NCAA Tournaments.
