Talk about it in The Eagles Nest
Ray Marten has been fairly quiet since his commitment to BC but he opened up on how everything went down when EagleAction.comspoke with him recently.
Marten is up to 240 pounds and aiming for 250.
The Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep tight end committed to Boston College all the way back in early June before spots started to get extremely tight. He locked in and secured his spot, and the timing of his choice - right at the start of summer, before the commitments continued, was in part due to his confidence that BC is where he wanted to be, and his desire not to be left out due to the number crunch.
"I felt like BC was the right school from the start," Marten said. "They were the first school to offer me. It just felt so right. It was the combination of academics, athletics and the location of the school. It just felt completely right."
BC might have been the first school to offer Marten but they weren't his only offer by the time his decision came. UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse and Wisconsin had all offered by that time, too.
The Eagles envision Marten as an H-Back, as EagleAction.com has reported, and that's the position he plays now for Poly Prep.
"All along there were other schools I really liked. But when all those other schools offered me (BC) was just the one that stuck out to me," Marten continued. "I visited there a couple of times and that was the only school that was really there for me, I guess. No schools really even came close."
With talk like that you might assume that recruiting is basically over and done with for Marten. You would be correct. He's solidly on board with the Eagles and that's music to Steve Addazio's ears, because he's been anxious to put a lid on the 2016 class for a while.
A couple of fellow BC commitments have followed Marten on Twitter and he followed them in turn. But there hasn't been much in the way of back-and-forth. That will come in time, Marten said, and for now he's just enjoying the lead-up to his senior year and his last season of high school football.
"Hopefully this summer I'll get to talk to a couple of guys," Marten continued. "I'll probably go up in the next couple of weeks and visit for the first time since I committed. When I committed I just wanted to make sure I had the spot there. I was sort of given a timeframe to make sure I had that spot and I wanted to make sure I had it."
Listed on his profile at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Marten told EagleAction.com that he's now up to 240, and his ultimate goal over the next year is to reach 250 on the scales without any of that being bad, excessive fat.
Since his commitment Marten has remained in steady communication with Addazio, Frank Leonard and a strength and conditioning coach on the Eagles' staff.
