I am a constant optimist about BC athletics. I always give them the benefit of the doubt and respect our football coaches enough to assume that they know what they're doing better than I do from afar. Furthermore we all know that stars mean something (there is a correlation between championship teams and how many 4/5 star players they have) but not everything (plenty of talent still that is not properly evaluated or recognized in high school that appears on the field in college). This being said I turn my attention to the two recent commitments whom, btw, I welcome to the BC family with open arms and appreciate their genuine interest in BC as their top school.
The concerns we're all feeling include the lack of prestige these two recruits carry on the national stage as is evidenced in their 2 star ratings and lack of P5 offers. Additionally, the timing of the staff's decision to accept their commitments as well as the scholarship crunch causes further concern. My conclusion here is that one of a few things has occurred and we're unlikely to find out the truth behind these two decisions.
Option A: The staff feels that these two kids are vastly underrated and have just secured two gems that have major potential at the P5 level. This is possible and likely the best possible scenario.
Option B: We received some indication that recruits like Niang and Alves are likely not going to pick BC as well as whatever higher ranked recruits we were targeting for the position Bletzer will be filling. This scenario seems somewhat more likely than Option A.
Option C: There are more scholarships available than previously thought and there is still room for the staff to accept commitments from our top targets. These recruits are local, love BC, and are good enough players when considering the other two factors to make them takes. This seems equally likely as Option B.
I trust that Addazio knows what he's doing here and feels that taking these kids is what's best for BC considering the options available to him. Grabbing two kids from the local area who will bleed Maroon and Gold, have the potential to be leaders both on the field and in the character they display, and who may influence future local studs to pick BC is the value of these picks. I am optimistic that we will see Bletzer and Leonard graduate in 4/5 years having influenced the success of the team in some meaningful way.
