ACKSBURG — Virginia Tech freshman quarterback William “Pop” Watson was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, Hokies coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, he won’t be with us this week,” said Pry, who did not disclose details of the violation.
Watson served as Kyron Drones’ backup last week at Rutgers with Grant Wells battling an ankle injury. The freshman entered the season as the Hokies’ No. 3 quarterback.
Freshman Dylan Wittke could potentially serve as Drones’ backup Saturday at Marshall. The quarterback depth chart will be determined on Wells’ health and availability.
Drones took the first-team snaps during the open portion of Wednesday’s practice.
“We’re still progressing. We’ll get all the way to kickoff with Grant, but we’ll have to get Dylan ready,” Pry said. “In fact, we’re getting Ben [Locklear] ready. We’ve got to be ready for whatever happens.”
“Hopefully Grant is good to go, and Dylan’s had a good two days,” Pry added. “That thing was pretty neck-and-neck when we went with Pop last week, so it’s a good opportunity for Dylan.
