Just confirmed from a different source that he is indeed on scholarship for Boston College.
Furthermore, came across some information regarding the scholarship crunch in the Class of 2017. That's the class the staff is working overtime on right now. The task is especially interesting in the case of the Eagles, currently, because they have several new assistant coaches. Each of the new coaches on the staff arrives with prospect lists or players in mind - some they had offered at previous stops, some they had not.
The BC staff will have to meet to evaluate those players themselves. And they will also have to determine whether those 'new' 2017 targets might be good fits at BC, or whether they wouldn't. I would imagine a lot of new names and offers would be emerging in the not too distant future. Furthermore, with new coaches in new recruiting regions it will be interesting to see how many new names emerge because of the preferences of various position coaches/geographical recruiters. Justin Frye might like some linemen down in Dallas or elsewhere, for instance. Jim Reid may like a different kind of defensive end in North Carolina. And so on.
Anyways, I'm told they could take 20 or 21 scholarship players in the 2017 class. "Kind of similar to this year," I was told. Then again, last year the original expectation was 13-15. Really, that was the expectation at a given point in time. People have had a good laugh or two over the way they blew the doors off that production, making me look bad in the process. I was told that there was just no way to anticipate what kind of attrition there would be, so part of the unpredictability of recruiting is the changing expectations from the start of a cycle to the end.
I think three priorities in the 2017 class will be:
Quarterback: Towles only gives you one year, and Loeffler will have to decide himself (and will only share it privately, I'm sure) how he feels about the quarterbacks on roster. This could determine whether they take one or two guys. They'll need to take at least one.
Running Back: I'd suspect they'll take at least two and maybe even a third if they find the right athlete/slot/all-purpose.
Defensive Back: They could have gone a little deeper there this year. The secondary will again be a priority.
Finally, they're still leaning away from a traditional 'junior day' set up this year. I am now hearing they are likely to have a smaller event. I think BC just realizes there's a need for a more targeted, selective recruiting strategy that's not a wide net attempt to wow enough good players so much as a concerted, detailed, relationship-oriented effort with guys worth their time.
