Says story in sports section of WSJ today, wish I could link to it but don't know how. Been saying this for years, they stole my idea, wrote to BuffaloNews and Rochester D&C with same thought a few years back.
For all you young pups here's th deal. Flutie started his pro career with the old NJ Generals, went to the Bears and had his best years in the CFL but then in '99 the Bills signed him and he took Buffalo by storm going 10-5, missed one game, and led Bills to playoffs where they hadn't been since the Jim Kelley years.
Then for some never explained reason coach Wade Phillips decides to start Rob Johnson, much ballyhooed former USC QB who never did anything as a pro. Course the Bills lost to the Titans and things have never been the same in Buffalo as the Bills now finish 16 yrs out of the playoffs.
If I ever run into Phillips who is now DC here in Denver I'll ask him straight off, why didn't you play Flutie in that game. He'll know exactly what I would be talking about because it's been a sore subject in Buffaloever since. Rumor has always been owner Ralph Wilson told him to but Wade has been close lipped.
Doug went on to play for San Diego and finished up an amazing 20 yr pro career with the Patriots. Lately his stock has been rising with many TV appearances, still figure he might get into the NFL HOF some day.
