My wife and I welcomed our first child, baby boy DCBC, in early November. A few years back, I had seen on a college football blog a picture of a "recruiting letter" a head coach had sent to a fan's newborn son. Obviously eager to ingrain my favorite teams in to my son's life, I reached out to my two favorite programs, BC (alum) and Ohio State (life long fan). I went on the website for each program and emailed the secretary to the head coach asking if they provided such letters. I got an email back from Urban's secretary within 10 minutes asking for my son's name and our address. We received a signed, handwritten letter with OSU Football letterhead in the mail three days later:
"You may consider me a little hasty in asking you to consider which college to attend, but we want to get an early start on beginning the tradition at The Ohio State University. We will look for you to make your collegiate debut in 2034 - you will need to gain a little weight, but our strength staff will take care of that! Go Bucks - Urban Meyer"
I think this will be awesome to have framed on a wall in a boy's room. I remember memorabilia or clothing from my childhood that my dad had gotten me got me that ended up affecting and shaping my rooting interests. If you were curious, I never heard back from BC. I'm honestly not complaining as things like this are so, so low on the totem pole of priorities for BC football. However, I do think the little things like this can go a long way towards growing or exciting the next generation of fans.
