BULL RIDING: Charlie Callinan is pulled down by two defenders after a long gainer in yesterday’s scrimmage.
Charlie Callinan is a cross between a tight end and a wide receiver, and that athletic mix is what makes him an attractive target in the Boston College passing game.
Callinan was the Eagles’ most productive pass catcher in the first formal training camp scrimmage on Shea Field yesterday. Callinan had four catches in the first half and one in the second on the units quarterbacked by Patrick Towles.
“We call him the hybrid guy because he’s a big guy with the speed to play outside,” said BC coach Steve Addazio. “Yet he can get near the box and kind of give you a tight end feel, so he brings a lot out there.”
Callinan added 15 pounds to his 6-foot-4 frame in the offseason and weighed 239 at the start of camp. The junior had 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns last season.
“I’ve put on weight but I’m carrying it real well and got a lot stronger,” said Callinan. “I’m still moving well so I’m just trying to get open and make a play when there needs to be one.”
Towles and Darius Wade focused primarily on the short passing game but each completed one deep pass. Throwing from his own end zone, Wade made a 44-yard connection with Elijah Robinson on a go-route down the left side line. Towles hit Thadd Smith on a 31-yard pass play late in the scrimmage.
Lookin’ good, Willis
Senior tailback Myles Willis scored the offense’s two touchdowns. The first was a 10-yard scamper off right guard from the Eagles’ red zone package. The second went 60 yards on a run to daylight up the middle. Willis was third on the team in rushing last season with 259 yards on 67 carries in nine games.
“The beauty of scrimmages on days like this is that you go out there and play,” said Willis. “We had a play that I really liked against that defensive front, and I knew if I could hit it clean I could take it to the house.”
Defense shines
Junior defensive end Jack Cottrell was a destructive presence on the Eagles four-man front. The 6-4, 253-pounder knocked down two pass attempts by Wade and another by Jon Fadule, and also had two quarterback pressures. Cottrell is competing to replace departed edge rushers Mehdi Abdesmad and Malachi Moore. . . .
The defense put up eight points on the offense on two big plays. Freshman linebacker John Lamot intercepted Wade on a sideline pass and ran it back for a touchdown. The trio of Lamot, linebacker Colton Cardinal of Franklin and redshirt freshman defensive back Mehdi El Attrach dropped tailback Richard Wilson in the end zone for a safety.
Secondary stars
Junior cornerback Gabriel McClary picked off Towles on a crossing route at midfield. Sophomore cornerback Lukas Denis of Everett had a nifty pass breakup and two solo tackles on sweeps. . . .
Tight end Tommy Sweeney was targeted three times with no completions. Tailbacks Jon Hilliman and Davon Jones of Worcester churned out tough yards between the tackles. Kicker Colton Lichtenberg missed wide right on two field goal attempts.
