A primer on preseason practice

Oftentimes we hear about captains practices, mini group practices with coaches and official first day of practice which I believe falls on the first Saturday in October. This article describes the process better for those of us who never quite knew what was allowed.

In essence when the school year starts, coaches can do on-ice work with groups of no more than four players at a time. And players can work out in captains practices. Then on September 15 entire teams are able to spend two hours per week together on the ice with coaches for skill instruction. Of course the mini groups and captains practices continue as well. Then all full practices are allowed on that day in October which most teams schedule an exhibition game that weekend. They are not blindly going into the exhibition as can be seen by the process involved.
